“In his adaptation of various styles (American popular music, European classical and avant-garde, Carnatic, fascination with complex rhythms, use of microtones in the search for melodic subtleties, etc.) and subsequent friction, McGowan generates new meanings,” according to musicologist Bob Gilmore.

His works have been performed throughout Europe, the U.S. and Asia by, among others, the Radio Kamer Filharmonie, Sinfonia Rotterdam, American Composers Orchestra, musikFabrik, Ricciotti, Calefax, Zapp4, Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble and the David Kweksilber Big Band.

McGowan was born in the United States in 1970 and has lived in the Netherlands since 1994. He is a lecturer in composition, teaches Advanced Rhythm and Ensembles at the Utrecht Conservatory and Music and Technology in Hilversum.
